MEET RUTH

It was at the kitchen table of her childhood home on the south side of Chicago that Ruth Vander Zee’s love of story was kindled.

Her father told stories--sometimes the same ones over and over. He also had the ability to make each day’s activities sound like an ongoing novella. Ruth filled her home with her own tales while raising three children. At the age of forty, she decided to get her college degree in education and later began writing stories for children.

Ruth has found her stories in her own front yard, in the classrooms in which she teaches, in church, sitting on a curb next to a stranger, riding the bus, drinking coffee with a friend, and countless other places. 

She has spent a lifetime connecting to people through music, storytelling, facilitating groups, speaking at conferences, and hosting people in her home. Now Ruth spends a lot of time at her computer writing and rewriting her stories. 

She taught Middle School for many years and currently substitute teaches.  Each year she visits many schools talking with students about her books.  Ruth and her husband Vern live in Miami, Florida.  They’ve also lived in Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Chicago.  They have traveled many places in the world.
